We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Take action. Help end violence against women and children.

Moose Hide Campaign

The Moose Hide Campaign is an Indigenous-led, grassroots movement of men, boys and all Canadians—standing up to end violence against women and children. Half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of violence since the age of 16; the percentage is much higher for Indigenous women.

The 2024 Moose Hide Campaign educational awareness event is being held on Thursday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Fireside Reading Room. The event will include a smudge, hand drum, performance by Kylie Soundy and a jingle dress demonstration for a healing dance. Light refreshments will be provided.

The Moose Hide Campaign will also be hosting virtual workshops for those who wish to learn more about the movement.

Ontario Tech encourages the campus community, and all partners and friends to join us and recognize the impact of gender-based violence, and learn more about our commitment to being an ambassador campus.

As an Ambassador Campus, we're working to build a safer society for all. You can get involved with the campaign by:

- Picking up a Moose Hide pin from the Engagement and Equity office located in Shawenjigewining Hall, Room 210. It is estimated that by wearing the pin, five conversations are shared about the movement.
