Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Program: Commerce

Year: Third

Favourite class: Legal Environment of Business. This class introduced me to law which is an area I did not think I had any interest in. After I took this class I decided to add Legal Studies as my minor and explore law further.

Hobbies/interests: Baking and cooking, playing sports and spending time with my friends

Career aspiration: Working for a company that aligns with my passions in the health and wellness sector.

Why I became a Peer Leader: I love helping people and getting involved on campus! I also really enjoyed orientation in my first year of university, so getting to attend every year as a peer leader is so much fun. Meeting incoming students and other peer leaders is a great experience as well!

Year: Third

Favourite Class: Business Computer Applications: This class was AWESOME! It taught me so much about Excel. I learned so much stuff that I use everyday, especially at my internship.

Hobbies/interests: I love nature! Going for walks or lounging in my hammock is one of my favourite things to do ($20 on Amazon, what a great deal right?!). Shopping is also technically a hobby of mine (more like a talent), but I’m trying to change that as I want to try and appreciate what I already have and transition into a slower way of living.

Career aspiration: I would love to be able to work in marketing in a job I truly love. Rather if it be I love the Company I’m working for/products I’m advertising or the people whom I’ll be working with. My true career aspiration is to have my “job” not really feel like a job at all. I wish to be happy in whatever I do. I believe that as long as I’m happy in my career I’ll always feel fulfilled and content within it. That’s my true aspiration.

Why I became a Peer Leader: I became a peer leader because I wanted to take on a leadership role within my university. I wanted to be able to lend a helping hand to people who may need it... I know I sure did when I was in first year! I think that you get what you give out of life and out of the university experience as a whole. The more involved you get/the more willing you are to actively participate in your university experience, the more you get out of it! I am a peer leader because I like to have fun and want others to have fun as well!

Program: Accounting

Year: Third

Favourite class: I don’t have a favourite class in business but I do love chemistry classes and lab just because they keep my mind busy.

Hobbies/Interests: Playing the piano or reading a book.

Career aspiration: Putting my degree to good use, and hopefully finish with a law degree after I finish my accounting degree

Why I became a Peer Leader: In my first year I didn't have a peer leader reaching out to me, and I was an international student, so it was very hard for me to adjust to university and a new environment. I wanted to be a Peer Leader so that I could help as many students as possible with the knowledge I gained from being an Ambassador and International Orientation Leader.
