Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Why I became a Peer Leader: I have always enjoyed welcoming new students to the university and lending advice to new students based on what I have learned from my university experience

Favourite class: Genetics- a very interesting class and the professor was wonderful!

Career aspiration: The goal is to become an Optometrist.

Why I became a Peer Leader: I became a Peer Leader as the role seemed very interesting to me. I have never seen anything like this at most other universities and thought it would be great to get involved and help other students out!

Favourite class: PHY2900U Astronomy I - Astronomy with Rupinder was one of my favourite classes of undergrad so far, as I found it super interesting to learn about the world beyond us, see our universe and galaxy from a completely different perspective. Although I am in biological science, I love all science has to offer! 

Hobbies/interests: I enjoy painting, cooking, and baking, and watching Netflix in my spare time. 

Career aspiration: To be an optometrist or a related profession in the healthcare field. 

Why I became a Peer Leader: The mentorship and connection with incoming students that the Peer Leader program provides are so close-knit. Since I started university and during freshman orientation, the Peer Leaders around me inspired me to help students myself one day too. I love getting involved on campus as well and making connections.

Favourite class: BIOL 2010 Human Physiology has been my favourite class so far, I have always been interested in learning about physiology and how everything works together! Plus, the prof is really good and engaging in teaching the material.

Career aspiration: Working as a pathologist.

Why I became a Peer Leader: I decided to be a peer leader to pay it forward since my peer leader did help to make my transition so much easier and I wanted to get more involved.

Why I became a Peer Leader: Coming into university was overwhelming given all the new things you're now exposed to. It might be hard for someone to adjust quickly, me being one of those people. The peer leader program helped me adjust and understand university life better. I've always valued helping people, so I want to pay it forward by hopefully helping new students get better adjusted to university!

Why I became a Peer Leader: I thought that my peer leader, for first year, went above and beyond in all the help that gave. It is a really important program and I wanted to do my part in helping out the future first years too!

Favourite class: BIOL 3060U Fundamentals of Neuroscience - not only was the content very intriguing, but the professor is a great lecturer. He simplified complex concepts and related them to a lot of research.

Hobbies/interests: I love traveling and learning about different cultures because it allows me to become a better world citizen and it broadens my horizons

Career aspiration: Pediatrician

Why I became a Peer Leader: Anything that allows me to help in the community and develop my leadership skills is right up my alley. Being a Peer Leader coincides perfectly with these two factors among other great benefits such as network building.

Why I became a Peer Leader: I became a Peer Leader because I love helping people. I want to make sure that people are comfortable and can always come to me for guidance whenever they want to because I never got to experience that in high school. Therefore, I know how it feels to not get any help when needed. I also like getting involved with the campus since I get to meet new people.

Why I became a Peer Leader: As a new student coming into university, it can be tough to adjust to the lifestyle and the pace of university. With the help of a peer leader that all can be easier and a lot more enjoyable. I became a peer leader to make the first year of university one of the most memorable times for my mentees.

Why I became a Peer Leader: Being a Peer Leader this past year helped me to realize how fun and rewarding it is to meet new students and to help them to navigate their first year of university. When I was in my first year of university, I found that just knowing that you have the support and guidance of an upper-year student really made a difference, and that's the difference I want to make for new students this year.

Favourite class: My favourite class has been my Introductory Forensic Science class! I know that it's kind of like cheating (since that's my major) but that class was so fascinating! I got a review of things I already knew and I loved everything new that I learned in the course. Also, I absolutely loved the professor (and his dog!) and thoroughly enjoyed all of the guest lecturers! 

Hobbies/interests: Crochet, embroidery, true crime, baking, and playing instruments.

Career aspiration: I want to be a research Forensic Anthropologist 

Why I became a Peer Leader: My Peer Leader was incredibly helpful and I could not be more thankful for that. I figured that the best way to give back for what she gave me and my group would be to become a Peer Leader and be that person for my own group!

Favourite class: PHY1020U - Even though I haven't been a big fan of physics, but my professor for this course (Rupinder Brar) made it soo fun! His approach to teaching physics is super fun and enjoyable, be it cracking jokes or having a serious discussion, there's never a dull moment in his lectures.

Why I became a Peer Leader: I didn't know about the peer leader program when I joined uni and how helpful it could be to have someone who could answer your questions and make the transition a bit easier. So becoming a peer leader is my way of being there for the new incoming students the way I wished someone was there for me!

Favourite class: COMM 3250 Pop Culture - This class is one of my favourites because I am a huge TV and movie buff! We learned so many theories relating back to pop culture and I found it to be a class that was extremely interesting and relatable to my own life!

Career aspiration: I hope to become a physician one day!

Why I became a Peer Leader: When I started at Ontario Tech, everything was so new to me and I realized that I had a lot of learning to do in order to familiarize myself with the campus and how things work at a university. It was nice to know that my Peer Leader was looking out for me and was committed to helping me during the transition from high school to university life. I value mentorship because of my positive experience as an incoming student who was matched into the Peer Leader program. I ultimately became a Peer Leader to give back and hopefully provide this year's incoming students with a positive experience as well!
