Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Student Leadership Awards of Recognition

Each year, students are celebrated for their achievements and contributions to the Ontario Tech community.

This year's nomination period has ended and the recipients have been selected!

Award categories 

Presented to undergraduate and graduate students:

  • President’s Award of Excellence in Student Leadership (two recipients)

  • Student Leadership Award (four recipients)

Student Leadership Awards

  • Nominee requirements
    • Must be a student enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or professional program.
    Undergraduate and professional students: 
    • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 to be considered for an award. 
    Graduate students: 
    • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 to be considered for an award. 
  • Accountability (Ethics) Award

    Students nominated for this award should:

    • Accept personal accountability in their leadership.

    • Exemplify dependability.

    • Incorporate ethical reasoning into their actions.

    • Uphold transparent leadership practices.

    The Accountability (Ethics) Award is presented to one student. The winner will also receive $100.

  • Community Building Award

    Students nominated for this award should:

    • Develop or assist in the development of stronger relationships within and/or between segments of the university community.

    • Foster connections and collaborative practices between peers, groups, and/or team members.

    The Community Building Award is presented to one student. The winner will also receive $100.

  • Innovation Award

    Students nominated for this award should:

    • Build upon, inspire or produce inventive ideas that surpass expectations in their leadership roles.

    • Formulate new approaches and consider alternative solutions to existing problems, or processes.

    • Have a creative impact on their leadership initiatives.

    The Innovation Award is presented to one student. The winner will also receive $100.

  • Respect Award

    Students nominated for this award should:

    • Influence or promote equitable practices within the university community.

    • Respectfully acknowledge or appreciate the perspectives and backgrounds of others and encourage others to do the same.

    The Respect Award is presented to one student. The winner will also receive $100.


President's Award

  • Nominee requirements
    Undergraduate and professional students:
    • Must be in their final year of study at the time of nomination.

    • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 to be considered for an award. 

    Graduate students: 
    • Can be in any year of study at the graduate level.

    • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 to be considered for an award.

  • President’s Award of Excellence in Student Leadership

    The President’s Award of Excellence in Student Leadership is awarded to two graduating students: One undergraduate or professional student, and one graduate student. President's Award winners will also receive a $500 award.

    Students nominated for the President's Award should fulfill the criteria listed in each of the Student Leadership Awards.

    Below is a summary of the criteria. Students nominated for this award should:

    • Accept personal accountability in their leadership.

    • Build upon, inspire or produce inventive ideas that surpass expectations in their leadership roles.

    • Develop or assist in the development of stronger relationships within and/or between segments of the university community.

    • Exemplify dependability.

    • Formulate new approaches and consider alternative solutions to existing problems or processes.

    • Foster connections and collaborative practices between peers, groups and/or team members.

    • Have a creative impact on their leadership initiatives.
