I have legally changed my name
Your legal name is the one used on official university documents and records, such as:
- Confirmation of enrolment
- Degree parchments and certificates
- Graduation letters
- Reports to government
- Transcript
If your name has been legally changed, there are several steps you can take to have your name updated in various areas across the university.

Updating your legal name
To update your legal first, middle or last name on your student record:
- Complete the legal name section of the Name/Gender Change form found on MyOntarioTech under the Current Students section.
It can take up to three working days to process your documentation. During peak times, it may take a bit longer than usual.
Your confidentiality is of the highest importance to us. You can update your record online, or if you would prefer to make an appointment, please contact Jennifer Racine, Manager Enrolment Services.

University student email
To update your school email, you must first submit a Name/Gender Change form with your updated legal name. The form can be found on MyOntarioTech under the Current Students section.
The university will then submit a request to the Service Desk on your behalf to begin the process of updating your email.
The Office of the Registrar will be notified when the name change has been completed and reach out through your university student email to let you know.

To display name on your university student email account will be automatically updated after your Name/Gender Change form has been processed.

Canvas
Canvas will be automatically updated after the Name/Gender Change form with your new legal name has been submitted and processed.

Class lists
Your class list will be automatically updated after the Name/Gender Change form with your new legal name has been submitted and processed.

Student ID card
After you have updated your legal name, you can get a new student ID card at no cost. Visit the Office of the Registrar to return your old card and obtain an updated one.

MyOntarioTech
MyOntarioTech will be automatically updated with your new legal name after the Name/Gender Change form has been submitted and processed.

Alumni card
The name used on your alumni card will be automatically updated after the Name/Gender Change form with your new legal name has been submitted and processed.

Human Resources
If you work for the university, your new name will be updated with Human Resources.
Your information will be automatically updated with your new legal name after the Name/Gender Change form is submitted and processed.

Student Awards and Financial Aid
It is important that the legal name on your student record matches the information you share with the government. This includes if you are currently receiving OSAP or another form of government financial aid.
To inform the Student Awards and Financial Aid office of a change to the legal name on your student record, please contact connect@ontariotechu.ca.

After the Name/Gender Change form with your new legal name has been submitted and processed, your official university documentation will automatically reflect the update.
