What is the difference between career counselling and employment advising?
Career counselling
Career counsellors take a guiding and exploratory approach to help students and graduates understand who they are and how they “fit” into the world of work. If you are unsure of what you want to do, they can help you explore your skills, interest areas, hopes for the future, and/or what is important to you. Career counsellors hold a master’s degree in counselling and can help you navigate anxiety and stress related to career and life decisions. Some common reasons to see a career counsellor include:
-
Coping with pressure from other people about what you should do.
-
Feeling unsettled or struggling with motivation in your program.
-
Help identifying strengths and how they connect to work.
-
Navigating stress and anxiety related to career and life decisions.
-
Support in researching options and next steps.
Employment advising
Employment advisors are the technical job search experts. If you know what kind of career you are looking for but would like help with applying and where to look, visit an employment advisor. They can also help you find summer student employment. Visit an employment advisor for help with:
-
Building your LinkedIn profile
-
Interview strategies
-
Graduate school personal statements
-
Job searching – sites and where to look for jobs
-
Professional communication skills
