Become a Peer Educator

The Student Learning Centre invites Ontario Tech undergraduate students to join our Peer Learning Program as a Peer Educator. This is a paid opportunity that not only helps you share your course knowledge with your peers, but also builds your resumé and leadership skills. 

As a Peer Educator, you'll offer academic support and guidance to your fellow students. Depending on the specific needs of our programs, the role you're assigned could vary.

Peer Educator postions

  • Peer Content Tutor: Help students understand and master course content and provide one-on-one and small group tutoring appointments.

  • PASS Leader: Create activities and facilitate study sessions for courses that are historically challenging.

  • Peer Success Facilitator: Aid students in developing effective and personalized study strategies.

  • Peer Writing Tutor: Assist students in improving their writing skills.

  • Study Hall Tutor or Peer Pod Tutor: Provide drop-in tutoring support in a collaborative environment.

  • Peer Learning Assistant: Support the Student Learning Centre team with administrative duties.

APPLY FOR THE FALL 2024 TO WINTER 2025 semester POSITIONS

  • Applications for the Fall 2024 - Winter 2025 semesters are open during the months of May, June and July (late applications may still be considered).

  • Interviews take place during May, June and July.

  • Job offers are made in July and August. 

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and interviews are scheduled as applications are received. Therefore, it is highly recommended to submit your application as early as possible to increase your chances of being considered for an interview. Late applications may still be considered, but priority will be given to those who apply early.

Mandatory Training Dates for Fall 2024 - Winter 2025 Positions 

Training is required for all Peer Educator positions. Before assuming the role, Peer Educators must complete a three day, paid training program from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with an unpaid one-hour lunch break each day).

Training is conducted online and candidates must be actively engaged, with their camera on and microphone available for use.

For the Fall 2024 - Winter 2025 positions, training will be offered twice in August on the following dates:

  • August 21, 22 and 23

  • August 26, 28 and 29

Peer Educators must be able to attend one of these training sessions in order to be hired.

Qualifications

  • Must be registered as an undergraduate student in a program at Ontario Tech University.

  • Third or fourth year (or higher) standing is preferred, but those in second year may be considered if they can support high-risk and high-enrollment courses.Typically, we do not consider applicants in their first year, as they have not yet taken enough courses to be able to tutor.

  • An overall GPA of 3.3 or above is required.

  • A GPA of 3.7 or above in the selected course(s) being supported is preferred; prior enrollment with the course instructor who is to teach the selected course is preferred.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) are required.

  • University Works conditional approval is preferred (though, not required) for fall/winter positions (however, University Works funding is required for all summer positions).

Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), demonstrates meta-cognitive awareness and has a strong understanding of group dynamics.

  • Openness to diversity.

  • Prior experience with group and one-on-one facilitation is an asset.

  • Respect for confidentiality.

  • Strong problem-solving and time-management skills.

  • Strong public speaking skills.

Summer and winter hiring periods

Spring/Summer

We have a small number of contracts available for Peer Educator positions over the spring/summer terms. The summer positions are full time (35 hours a week), which typically take place during our regular 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. business hours. Some evening or weekend shifts may be required. Candidates must be registered Ontario Tech undergraduate students who will be returning to their studies in the fall. Summer Peer Educator candidates must qualify for University Works funding in order to work in these roles.

Winter

In addition to hiring over the summer for the fall/winter contracts, we often conduct a second round of hiring for the winter term to fill any vacancies. The winter hiring process takes place at the end of the fall semester. Typically, applications open in November and interviews take place in December.
