Equity Advocates

Students holding the pride flag

In this role, students identify areas in the campus community that need further development from an equity perspective. Equity Advocates develop initiatives, campaigns and events that engage and encourage students to act more inclusively and empathetically working towards the creation of an inclusive campus community.

The Equity Advocates identify their own program outcomes and goals, and each year, students are selected and are split into smaller teams to work on these specific programs. The Equity Advocates are supervised and mentored by the Student Development Specialist - Equity Programs in their program development process.

Previous program goals have included:

  • Anti-Islamophobia: To raise awareness about the ways that Islamophobia manifests and is perpetuated.
  • Trans Week of Awareness: To increase the safety and comfort of transgender and gender non-conforming students at the university.

Recruitment for Equity Advocates and other leadership opportunities for the following year happens in January of the current academic year. If you miss this opportunity, connect with the Student Development Specialist- Equity Programs at equity@ontariotechu.ca to find out how you can still get involved.

Incoming first-year students will have an opportunity to sign up as Equity Advocates in September.
